Music Publishing Needs Better Tools

Independent music publishers are drowning in spreadsheets. We know because we’ve been there.

Every quarter, they’re juggling reports from dozens of sources, calculating splits on thousands of songs, and generating statements that need to be 100% accurate – all while trying to actually sign and support songwriters.

The big players have million-dollar systems to handle this complexity. The indies? They’re stuck with Excel hell or overpriced legacy software that feels like it was built in 1997.

That’s why we created Splitpea.

The Market Opportunity Is Massive

The global music publishing market exceeds $10 billion annually and is projected to reach $13.7 billion by 2032. Independent publishers account for approximately 26% of this market – that’s $2.78 billion in 2023 – and this segment has doubled in value since 2018.

While major publishers (Sony/Universal/Warner) dominate roughly 60% of the market with sophisticated internal systems, thousands of independent publishers lack access to affordable technology solutions that meet their needs.

This creates a perfect opportunity: a growing segment of the market that’s underserved by current solutions.

What We’ve Built

Splitpea is a cloud-based royalty accounting platform built specifically for independent music publishers. It automates the tedious tasks of tracking royalties and generating statements, so publishers can focus on signing artists and growing catalogs instead of wrangling spreadsheets.

Our platform includes:

Automated Data Ingestion: Easily import royalty data from multiple sources – PROs, mechanical royalties, streaming reports, etc.

Contract-Based Calculations: Define each composition’s details once, and the system automatically applies these terms to all incoming royalty data.

Professional Statements: Generate clear, accurate royalty statements for songwriters with one click.

Accessible Analytics: Visualize earnings trends and gain insights without a data science degree.

Cloud-Based & Scalable: Works on any device, handles catalogs of any size.

How We’re Different

We’re not another enterprise system with enterprise complexity and pricing. Splitpea stands out because:

Focused on Independents: Purpose-built for the indie publisher workflow – not a watered-down corporate system.

Affordable, Transparent Pricing: No per-transaction fees that balloon with success.

Simple Onboarding & Operation: Set up in minutes, not months. No accounting degree required.

Built by Industry Insiders: Created by a music publisher & attorney + a developer who gets the real problems.

All-in-One Solution: End-to-end publishing royalty management in one place.

Our Traction & Progress

We completed our MVP in Q1 2025 and have successfully processed real royalty data through the platform. Our co-founder Julian has been dogfooding Splitpea with his own boutique catalog (Augmented Music Publishing) – managing royalties for songs by multi-platinum artists including Lil Durk and A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie.

The system has handled thousands of royalty lines and produced accurate statements that matched manual calculations. We’re now entering a private beta phase with 3-5 independent publishers to gather feedback and refine the product further.

Early user feedback has been extremely positive – users love the clean interface and report that Splitpea cuts days of work down to hours.

Investment Opportunity – $750K Seed Round

We’re seeking $750,000 in seed funding to accelerate Splitpea’s growth and establish our position as the go-to royalty solution for independent music publishers.

Use of Funds:

Team Expansion (60%): Hire additional engineering talent to accelerate product development and build out planned features.

Product Development (20%): Enhance our platform with AI-powered features for data ingestion and analysis, user experience improvements, and expanded integrations.

Go-to-Market (15%): Launch targeted marketing efforts to reach independent publishers and establish partnerships within the music industry.

Operations (5%): Cover legal, administrative, and infrastructure costs to support growth.

This funding will provide approximately 18 months of runway, during which we aim to onboard 50+ paying customers and establish the foundation for scaling to hundreds of publishers worldwide.

Our Vision & Roadmap

Our immediate milestones include:

Q2-Q3 2025: Complete private beta and gather comprehensive user feedback

Q3 2025: Launch public beta with self-service sign-up

Q4 2025: Reach 50 active publishing clients

2026: Establish industry partnerships and integration with key music industry platforms

Looking further ahead, we envision Splitpea becoming the backbone royalty system for thousands of independent publishers, songwriters, and labels worldwide. We’ll expand from our core publishing royalty features to include master royalties, sync licensing management, and AI-powered royalty forecasting.

Our long-term vision is to create a unified dashboard for music earnings that any rights holder – from solo indie artists to established publishers – can use to manage their income streams with confidence and clarity.
